Christmas Markets

Post your photos of Christmas markets here.
If you want to do me a favour, don't make it too cheesy.

Our little local market opened yesterday. And just in time for the occasion, it started to snow. Really beautiful.
And above all, less and less often.
In the meantime, hot Caipirinha or even cold Caipirinha is being offered more and more often alongside mulled wine, depending on the temperature.

Opening by our local Christ Child - not to be confused with the Nuremberg Christ Child

Sony Will Let You Add Custom Gridlines to Your a7 IV for $150

Hearing the calls from desperate photographers asking for meaningful firmware updates, Sony has obliged with the option for Sony a7 IV users to add up to four custom gridlines to their cameras for a $150 fee.

The “Custom Gridline License” allows a7 IV users to import up to four custom, original gridlines into the camera that can be displayed on the electronic viewfinder or the rear LCD for what Sony says allows for the creation of more consistent photos.

“For example, staff at schools, photo studios, theme parks, cruise ships, malls, etc. will now have the ability to update their cameras with ease and utilize this tool for quick and precise, more professional shots,” the company says.

“Imported customized gridlines are replaceable and color gridlines are available. Once gridlines are registered, it can be displayed with HDMI output as well. After shooting, users can check the images with the grid lines overlayed on EVF and LCD.”

While that is the primary purpose, Sony says that not only can these be used as gridlines but they can also be used as partially filled transparency masks.

Sony’s upgrade has received the backing of multiple organizations in its press release, including Inter-State Studio and Publishing, Strawbridge Studios, Inc., the School Photographers of America (SPOA), and the School Photographers Association of California (SPAC). The target, obviously, is squarely what is often described as “turn and burn” photo jobs that are high volumes of consistent portraits.

“The ability to import customized gridlines into a mirrorless camera is an essential feature for all of our photographers to capture images consistently,” says Frank Lombardo, National Photography Manager for Inter-State Studio and Publishing, for example. “These simple gridlines keep head sizes the same for all our products and improve our production time. They also allow us to know where the edge of print will be during capture.”

It should be noted that this one function is the entirety of the $150 license. For context, Panasonic’s optional S1 filmmaker upgrade costs the same and that adds 4K 60p 4:2:2 10-bit HDMI live output, 4K 30p/24p 4:2:2 10-bit in-camera recording, LUT support, and V-log.

The Sony a7 IV gridlines license will be available for $149 directly from Sony’s Upgrade and License Management Suite starting in Spring of 2024. Sony says it will add the upgrade option to more cameras “in the future.”
Seems like a lot of money to charge for some grid lines.

Best CF Express Card Type B for Canon R5

Ok, Gentlemen: Could use some help while waiting for my Canon USA store R5 body to arrive later in week. Would like to know the best 256GB or 512GB CF express Type B card to use in the R5? Would much appreciate hearing your current experience with same while the Black Fri sales are still going on. I'm not worried about 8k raw video capabilities. Thx in advance with any suggestions.

Canon Patent Application: More Quad Pixel Applications Emerge

Today, two more patent applications discussing quad-pixel auto-focus sensors have been published by the Japan Patent Office. The first patent application 2023-167634 deals with the fact that scan times will vary between row and column scanning, which could lead to inaccurate auto-focus performance. Many conventional image sensors give priority to reading out signals in either

A patent application (2023-166831) from Canon has just been released for improved cooling for a small form factor camera, that also includes IBIS. The form factor that Canon describes seems to be quite similar to that of the Canon R5C, but smaller. Originally I was going to suggest this was for a cinema camera, but

Voigtlander 50mm f1 Nokton RF Review

Gordon from CameraLabs has done a great review of the Voigtlander 50mm F1.0 Nokton RF. Yes, that’s an F-One-Point-Zero. Of course, the only reason it’s allowed on our precious RF mount legally is that it’s manual focus, so, at F1.0, that’s going to provide some challenges. But if you grew up with manual focus lenses

Penguin Extravaganza!!!!

My big trip for this year was this epic and exciting expedition to, quite literally, the "end of the earth". I only had a few days in Patagonia to scout out for a future tour I am setting up. But it was amazing to spend them in this incredible landscape and to have some great success with the Pumas! Next I flew out to the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas) and spent one week there visiting a few islands (also part of the workshop scouting). The final phase of the trip was to jump aboard an expedition ship and travel to South Georgia and Antarctica.

I feel so lucky to get to visit such incredible places and I hope that the images I captured do them some justice.

Below are a few of my favourite images that I hope you will enjoy.

Where are the RF T/S lenses? [inc. a look at the 30mm T/S for GFX]

OK, where are the Canon TS lenses for RF? Come to think of it, the Nikon Z mount PC-E lenses have not appeared either...

I've just finished a long test of the Fuji 30mm F5.6 TS lens [including some notes on the TS-E24 II] and it trounces any [wide] tilt/shift lens I've ever tested.

https://www.northlight-images.co.uk/fuji-30mm-ts-review/ [includes 2 videos 18 & 34 mins]

The shift and mount rotation are encoded in EXIF making correction of shifted images a whole lot easier [potentially - only C1 supports it at the moment]

So, for an RF 24mm T/S lens, how wide an aperture is needed? The F5.6 of the Fuji was more than enough for any application I'd use

The TS-E50, 90II and 135 show how good Canon can do - all perform well on larger sensors too.

If there was one thing my TS-E24 II reminded me of after the testing, it was just how far lens design has come on since the TS-E24 and 17 were released. I'm still happy to use it, but the quality of the Fuji 30mm on a GFX100S sure was impressive [even if it's a $4000 lens ;-) ]

Theoretical and practical limits of high megapixel cameras.

Being a high resolution senor enjoyer myself, im wondering where the future might take us.
Will the pixel counts of modern sensors just increase generation to generation forever?

I believe they wont. When i started to photograph, many people were longing for more megapixels, but nowadays the calls for more megapixels got quiter and most people
seem to be content with whats available on the market.

Some people do still want more megapixels tho. And here im asking, how far will it go?

Of course there must be some limits to megapixelcount i imagine. Here some, that i can think of:

* Too limiting for shutterspeeds - Shots of moving subjects will need too fast of a shutter speed to be practial
* Limited by diffraction. Some lenses, like f6.3, will become limited by diffraction very soon, at like 76 megapixels.
* Limited by practicability - who needs it? at what point will there be no more market, because noone prints that big?
* Limited by lenses - is there some point, where it becomes too expensive to design lenses to resolve those high megapixel sensors (even right now most lenses dont resolve the full potential of today 45 - 61 megapixel sensors)?
* Too limited by iso, at some point you will only see all megapixels by iso 100 and anything above will result in not getting the full benefit of the pixel count

Perhaps you can think of more reasons.

What do u think? What will be the most limiting factors and where do you think we will end up, pixel count wise, in the forseeable future?
