TS-E 17mm and R5?

Has anyone successfully used the TS-E 17mm on their R5 using the Canon EF to RF adaptor? I get F00 reported as the aperture and, even though I have set menu to ‘shoot without lens’ the shutter won’t fire. The TS-E 24mm works just fine… have cleaned contacts, etc etc. Any experience? Suggestions? Thanks

Canon G550 review (and G650/620 etc) ...yes it can work well ;-)

I've just published my detailed review of the Canon G550 (this also applies to the print capabilities of the models with scanners)

https://www.northlight-images.co.uk/canon-g550-printer-review/

Very much aimed at seeing what I could get from this little printer despite the enforced use of AirPrint driver on the Mac

So, whilst I have a big set of profiles available - they cannot be used on Windows systems, since they are effectively profiling the AirPrint-driver/media-setting as a black box.

However... it's capable of making nice looking prints and as a 'tank' type printer is very cheap to run and get into printing your work.

Canon EF 24-70 2.8 L II used for $1060.00?

I have the opportunity to buy the Canon EF 24-70 2.8 L II used for $1060.00 at my local camera store. I have about $800.00 in gift cards so I'll be paying less than $300.00 in real money. I've looked it over and it looks practically brand new. I did rent another copy today through Borrowlenses.com and I'm not sure if I received a bad rental copy. I shot all these at f/5.6. They just don't look as sharp as I was expecting from this holy Canon lens. The vertical images was shot last 38mm and the second image was shot at 70mm. I currently have the EF 24-105 f/4 L IS and a Canon 6D. How do these images look? Anyone else get the 24-70 2.8 L II after owning the first gen 24-105 L IS? Thank you.2470_3.jpg2470_1.jpg

Black Friday sales for Canon

Hi all, I currently have a 10 year old Nikon D7000 and was looking to upgrade.

I saw on this site that there will be a Black Friday discount for $1000 off EOS R + 24-105mm F/4 (or $800 off the R body). Since the regular price of the kit is $2899, that would be $1899 (+tax). Does anyone know if these Canon Rumors prices listed for Black Friday tend to be true?

My budget is about $2000 (could sell some Nikon stuff and go higher if needed). I'm a non-pro/advanced amateur, and my photography is family, travel, kids soccer, landscapes, wildlife and a little video (in that order). I know the limitations of the frame rate (5 fps w/AF, 8 w/o), but my D7000 is only 6 fps so not optimal but fine for kids sports. At some point I'd add add one of the 100-400mm zooms and probably the 16mm prime.

Any advice would be awesome, thank you!!

Scott

Viltrox has announced the Viltrox AF 85 / 1.8 STM ED IF for the RF mount

Press Release (Google Translated) New lens from Viltrox with Canon RF mount!
The lens features high-quality workmanship, and the all-metal construction ensures safety and durability. A large aperture and a 9-blade aperture allow you to achieve beautiful background blur (so-called bokeh), which is highly valued and sought after in portrait photography.
Advanced optical design
The optical construction consists of 10 elements arranged in 7 groups. The construction uses one ED element with a very low level of dispersion and 4 SR (Short-Wavelength Refractive) lenses responsible for the refraction of short wavelength beams. They are to serve even better reduction of chromatic aberration. The minimum focus distance is 80cm.
Object tracking and eye detection (EYE AF) support
The Viltrox AF 85 mm f1.8 lens uses a quiet and fast STM SilentMotor. The AF speed will work well in photography, and the silent drive in video, especially when filming or photographing in discreet / demanding places /...

SIGMA will address the RF mount in 2022 [CR3]

I don’t have a lot of reliable sources for SIGMA and Tamron, which isn’t for a lack of trying.  One of the most asked questions I get is “when will SIGMA and/or Tamron launch RF lenses?” With my answer usually being that I have no idea.
That may have changed this week, as a good source for other areas of the industry told me that at least SIGMA would be addressing the RF mount in 2022. While the source wasn’t privy to the actual roadmap, they did think that we’d see 3-5 lenses announced for the RF mount in 2022. The biggest roadblock for SIGMA is apparently manufacturing capabilities beyond just the issues from the pandemic. This does make some sense, as SIGMA has said in the past that keeping up with demand is an ongoing challenge.
As for Tamron, I haven’t heard a peep about their plans.
More to come…

The first noise test results from the Canon EOS R3 are in

The-Digital-Picture has posted the first bit of image quality testing for the brand new Canon EOS R3. The first test deals with noise from the EOS R3, and you can compare it to pretty much every other camera out there.
You can check out the methodology of the image quality testing here.
I’m not a pixel peeper type, but I’m quite impressed by the first results. It definitely has a more pleasing noise pattern than the Canon EOS R5 or Canon EOS R6...

Flare issues with 70-200 f4

Today I was shooting an event and placed my hand out over the hood of the 70-200 f4 to cut the lens flare from the slightly back lit scene.
A buddy who was there shooting with the Sony A9 and the 70-200 f4 asked why? I took his camera and from the very same spot, he had no flare.
I checked mine again, very noticeable flare.

I really like this small, light lens, but this is not the first time i am fighting flare while no one else is.

Has anyone else noticed flare issues with the f4 version?

New Canon imagePROGRAF printers have been delayed for almost a year [CR2]

Photo printers have become a bit of a niche market, with all of the great online solutions out there. However, if you’re like me, you love doing it at home and playing with various papers and that sort of thing.
Canon was scheduled to release a replacement for the imagePROGRAF PRO-1000 in late 2020, but it has obviously been delayed due to the pandemic. I have been told that there is a specific part inside a photo printer that is nearly impossible to source at this time, and there’s no timeline on when that issue will be resolved.
The imagePROGRAF Pro-1000 has been around for 6 years, so it’s definitely ready for a refresh. If you can hold out for another 6 months or so, I would wait on buying one.
The replacement for the imagePROGRAF will add two new cartridges, along with a new chroma optimizer tank. The printer will also have the ability to use rolls of paper, which has been a much asked for feature.
I have also been told that there...

Need help with auto exposure in continuos video clip moving from indoors to outdoors (EOS R6)

Hi,

I am filming a short video clip of a person walking from an indoor location (a bit dark) to an outdoor location (quite bright, with white bricks in the background) in one continuos movement (no cuts).

I am using the Canon EOS R6 in the Manual Shooting mode, recording 4K 25 FPS IPB. The Shutter Speed is set to 1/50 and the Aperture to the widest (f/4 on my lens) and ISO set to Auto.

I am using eye-tracking AF, which also influences the exposure. Due to the dynamic nature of the clip (one take), I cannot manually adjust the exposure while recording, so that's why I am using Auto ISO

The problem occurs when the person walks outside. At the door entrance, the entire image gets overblown, and it takes a few seconds for the camera to adjust the exposure. I'd like to make this faster somehow, since it doesn't look good when the person is overblown.

I can adjust the highlights a bit in post, but it doesn't look super good. If possible, I'd like to avoid having the camera overexposure in the first place.

  • I have also tried Clog3, which is a bit better, but the issue still persists
  • It is not possible to add artificial lights to the scene
  • It is not possible to use another camera

Thanks in advance :)

Samyang RF 85/1.4 failing?

Hey all,

I know I've been one of the biggest evangelists for 3rd party glass in the last couple of years, especially as the RF ecosystem took off without many lower budget alternatives to Canon's 1st party F/1.2 glass, but I think this has come to bite me in the ass. I was working on a job tonight and my Samyang RF 85/1.4 began experiencing a communications problem (Canon Error 01) with my EOS RP. The lens is totally freaking out, with the aperture randomly dilating and the screen flickering. Changing lenses, changing batteries, powering on and off -- nothing is helping.

If anyone can offer any advice about what to do with this issue, I'm all ears (you're also welcome to laugh at me, if that makes you feel good. I do feel pretty stupid, and depending on my options, may decide to sell all my 3rd party glass and buy the newly available, cheaper RF alternatives).

Why are so many R system bodies and lenses available used?

I'm surprised at how frequently dealers have used RF lenses and R bodies for sale. It seems like at least once a week or more CPW will have a new listing of used R system equipment either from major retailers like B&H and Adorama or from one of the major used dealers like MPB.

Of course the prices are high. The used equipment is often listed for only about $50 or so below new, but I do wonder who is trading in this recently released equipment? For example, I just saw a hard to find 100-500 listed from MPB.

KEH has a used 14-35 f4 (at least they did a few minutes ago).

As someone who keeps his equipment far longer than I probably should, I can't imagine getting a lens like the 100-500 or the 14-35 and immediately trading it in. Especially knowing that the sellers have to be taking a big hit on the lenses and bodies. Looking at the used watch list, just in the past three days there were 11 RF lenses listed.

New firmware coming for the Canon EOS R5 in the next month or so

I have been told that we can expect a firmware update for the Canon EOS R5 sometime around the ship date for the Canon EOS R3. The EOS R3 is scheduled to begin shipping on November 26, 2021.
The firmware update will likely include added support for the RF 5.2mm f/2.8L Dual Lens Fisheye that is scheduled to begin shipping in December of this year.
The usual bug fixes are also likely. Other than that, I have no information about any additional features that may be added to firmware v1.5.0 for the EOS R5.

Jan Wegener on extenders

The big take away from this video is that Sony 200-600 and Canon RF100-500 take extenders surprisingly well, which @AlanF has shown in the Dragons and damsels thread as well.
Jan also shows the quality difference between cropping and extenders in a few situations, including downscaling a photo shot with extenders to the same amount of pixels of the cropped picture. The overall advice is still "It depends", but with autofocus at f/22 and much improved noise performance and reduction in post, using extenders isn't as bad as it was 5 years ago.

In which country is the Canon EOS R3 the cheapest, and most expensive?

It’s always fun to look at the pricing of camera gear in various countries. Well, maybe it’s not so much fun when you live in the countries where gear costs the most.
Nukeni has done up a price comparison of the Canon EOS R3 in 26 different countries, and there is quite a difference between the top and bottom.
From Nukemi
We investigated prices across 166 countries, and published the prices from the 26 countries from which we retrieved prices. When taxes were not included in prices on the websites, we calculated the totals with tax, using the information on taxes in each country available on Avalara. The countries we added taxes to are the US and Canada. The US and Canada have different tax rates depending on where you make purchases, so we show two prices, one for the product purchased in the location with the lowest tax rate, and one...
