Sony FF mirrorless market share collapse in Japan reaching milestone, Canon takeover imminent

If these numbers are accurate, the trajectory for Sony FF mirrorless market share and Canon's will cross each other within the next month or two, placing Canon as the top FF mirrorless maker in the home market and relegating the once dominant Sony to 2nd place. If this sounds familiar, it is because the overall market share of ILC's including mirrorless and DSLR's are in this order, with Canon at a dominating 45% of overall worldwide share for all of 2019, and Sony at a distant 20% second place.

What is remarkable about Sony's home market share collapse is the speed in which this happened. As recently as June 2018 Sony had a 100% share, and with the entrance of Canon and Nikon, started a steep decline followed by a slow recovery, and now another noticeable decline triggered by the Canon R5/R6 entrance. This has culminated in a new all-time low of 43.9% Sony share, a staggering 56% loss in just over 2 years, and continuing. This precipitous drop in Sony share is in sharp contrast to the pro-Sony headlines that gives an impression of the opposite happening - that Sony is the one dominating. "Sony conquers Canon", "Sony dominates mirrorless markets, and the competition is a long way behind", "Sony overtakes Canon", etc. While market share undulation is normal month-to-month, making headlines based on these undulations in Sony's favor is not only insignificant, it is misleading.

The wide-angle market view shows a more accurate picture of trends and the real deal, so to speak. With the annual aggregate sales of 2019 showing that Canon actually gained more market share (+2.4%) despite its dominant position than its nearest rival Sony (+0.9%), combined with this imminent Canon takeover of the home FF mirrorless market, it is more accurate to worry about the competition's health in keeping Canon vigilant and hungry. It will be interesting to see if Sony can slow down or reverse this trend in the coming months, as pro-Sony aspirations look increasingly obscure and irrelevant.

Review: Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM

The Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM recently began shipping to much fanfare. This brand new short telephoto is going to find its way into many camera bags as quickly as Canon can build them. The lens is very affordable at $599 USD.
Gordan Laing from CameraLabs has completed his full review of the RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM. You can watch the video above, or hit the article link after the break.

Gordon’s summary:
……Throw in optical stabilisation that benefits bodies with or without IBIS and you have a very compelling lens for the money. The biggest issue is the wealth of alternative 85s to choose from, including a bunch from Canon, but the RF 85mm f2 represents a step-up in overall quality, close focusing and potential burst speed over the old EF 85 1.8 and is a lot more affordable than the faster 85s in Canon’s range. If you’re desperate for an 85 1.4 at a more affordable price, look to...

Pentaprism 5D discontinued....?

Are canon really discontinuing the pentaprism, I mean, rather than a tiny R5, I would prefer a LARGER 5D with a LARGER pentaprism, a'la the one on the 1D's (but with more pixels than the 20 mp that the 1Dx3 offer), or if possible, a larger one yet.

I can't use a digital viewfinder for anything, for one thing, if what is in focus is marked in the viewfinder, then I can't see the fine details that I need to see to press the shutter at just the right moment, and for another, if I haven't got it on, then I can't really see what is in focus.
With a low-tech 100% 0.90x optical viewfinder, both is extremely easy....

What are they thinking....?

Here is the Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM

Canon will be announcing the Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM alongside the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8, which leaked earlier this week.
For scale, here is a size comparison between the RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM and it’s big brother, the RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM.

Both of these lenses have been long-rumored and should be big sellers for Canon. I expect an official announcement from Canon early next week.

Venus Optics announce the new Laowa 15mm f/4.5 Zero-D Shift Lens – World’s Widest Shift Lens for Full Frame Cameras

Anhui China, Oct 30, 2020 – Venus Optics, the manufacturer specialized in making unique camera lenses, pioneered Laowa 15mm f/4.5 Zero-D Shift, the widest shift lens for full-frame cameras and medium format cameras. Giving credits to a ±11mm shift amount (±8mm on the medium format), this ultra-wide shift lens breaks through the industry level and bringing the wide-angle lens standard to the next level.
Image quality is guaranteed with high image sharpness and nearly no optical distortion (Zero- D). The 15mm f/4.5 Zero-D Shift enriches the diversity of Laowa’s extensive wide-angle lens collection by giving photographers more control on the perspective in their images.

World’s widest shift lens for Full Frame Cameras
15mm f/4.5 Shift is the widest shift lens for a full frame camera. The angle of view is 110°, and it covers a huge ⌀ 65mm image circle. The wider perspective offers great deal of flexibility for photographers to capture architecture and interior shots when space...

Lens design comparison: Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM and the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM

Here is a lens diagram comparison between the EF 50mm f/1.8 STM and the upcoming Canon RF 50mm f/1.8.  The new RF 50mm f/1.8 STM definitely looks like a brand new lens design and not simply making the EF mount version work with RF, which likely would never be worth the time and effort anyway.
As pointed out by forum contributor privatebydesign, this is a “double-gauss” lens design.
I expect to see this lens announced next week, if not sooner.

R5 left eye ergonomics?

Hi, I've currently got an M6 and considering upgrading to the R5. I'm specifically concerned about the ergonomics of using the viewfinder with the left eye, since I'm mostly blind in the right. The M6 works great, as the hot shoe viewfinder leaves plenty of room even when used with the left eye. Can anyone comment on how well that works with the R5?

Help me pick my first lens.. do I stick with EF-M or adapt EF in anticipation of moving to R series

Friends, I find myself looking in multiple directions at once. Let your collective wisdom guide me!

I currently have an M50 with just the kit 15-45 lens.
I also have an EF 50mm 1.8.

I do want to upgrade my body soon, to something more ergonomic and with fancy eye tracking. The M50 has been a great first camera, but I find it a bit too small in the hands, and the tech enthusiast in me craves some advanced features.

I'm mostly concerned with photography, and my video needs would be limited to a few small clips here and there. With two small kids, they are probably going to be the primary subject most of the time.

My current line of thinking was to get the Sigma 30mm f/1.4; as I'd like to be able to get some indoor shots over the holidays.

But with Canon's lack of activity in the M series, I'm not sure I should start buying EF-M lenses...
What about the EF 35MM F2 IS? And then bring it with me to an eventual R series.

Maybe it doesn't matter if I eventually want to replace EF with RF lenses anyway. Hmm!

Canon to announce the RF 50mm f/1.8 STM and RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM soon

The long-rumored Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM and Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM will likely be announced sometime in the next couple of weeks. These lenses have been delayed a couple of times already this year I have been told.
As noted by Nokishita today, the lens hoods for each lens have been added to Canon’s product catalog. Lens hood ET-83G (WIII) and Lens hood ES-65B will be for the RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM and RF 50mm f/1.8 STM.
Both of these lenses will be small, especially the RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM which I have been told is basically the “size of a Coke can”.
More to come…

Can't use the R5 for agency weddings.. :-(

I have been using my pair of 5D3 for weddings..(and everything else) and have them set to 1/2 res, which is about 10MP, instead of 22mp for my agency weddings that I shoot. I was even told recently by one client, and by others in the past, that they do not want large High Res files... 12mp Max..! Upon ordering my R5, I would only imagine that they would have included smaller RAW file sizes... but nope... I'm stuck with 45mp RAW files, that take a long time for me to process on my iMac, and for my agency clients to upload, and process on their end.. Nice camera and all... but now, with both of my 5D3 bodies closing in on 300k shutter actuations.. I'll end up blowing 400ish $ on each body to get them ready for next season, unless Canon can make a change that should be a no-brainer.. IMO... Geezus Canon...!! I waited since July 19th to get this into my hands and now I see that I can't shoot a smaller RAZW file..??? I'm mad.

R5 AWB "Blues"

Is it just me, or do others find the AWB setting on the R5 to be off? I have shot professionally with just about every EOS digital body they've come out with. Aside from their very unpredictable on camera flash results, I thought they all did their jobs well. I have an R5, been shooting with it for a few weeks, and my main complaint is that the auto white balance setting is not up to their prior specs. Having never had the luxury of shooting RAW, I relied on that setting nearly 100% of the time in the past, but this one is very un-Canon in my opinion. I would think that it could be as simple as a firmware bump to get it where it would be trustworthy. I realize that hitting a white sample in post isn't that much of a big deal, but if you need to "fix" a couple of hundred files, that one little step takes a lot of time. Anyone else finding this, or has RAW taken over the modern digital workflow??
Otherwise, a great camera, so far.
Thanks for reading

There is an APS-C RF mount camera coming [CR3]

After months upon months of speculation, I have finally confirmed that an APS-C RF mount camera is coming, and it’s planned to be launched in the 2nd half of 2021. As for anything product-wise during the pandemic, these announcements are a moving target.
My source has confirmed that it will be the smallest EOS R system camera, but will pack a punch for both sports shooters and videographers. I will note that “smallest” doesn’t necessarily mean that it’ll be all that much smaller than the EOS RP. The same source also said that there aren’t any plans for RF-S lenses, but that there will be lenses that will suit both the APS-C and full-frame shooter.
The same source also said it will use a new APS-C image sensor with DPAF II, but specifications beyond that are very vague.
The image used for this post is a mockup and not the actual camera.
