Nikon Z 600mm f6.3 VR S Lens Announced

Nikon has announced the latest PF lens. Weighs the same as the 500mm f/5.6 PF at 1.47 kg without hood. Its minimum focus distance is longer at 4m. 95mm thread. It will be a winner for Nikon among birders and wild life photographers. Not cheap at £5000/$4800. Pity it doesn’t have the 3m mfd of the 500mm PF.

Lenses with smooth/soft contrast

After trying some of the RF lenses I have noticed that the contrast is WAY way to high for my taste. In this case the RF 50/1.8. Blacks are almost completely crushed and highlights are too hot. I understand that the purpose is to have ready JPEGs but it really makes them look harsh and uninspiring.

Now, of course the solution is to edit them to taste but I believe a lot of details can be rendered better with an old school lens. I am not talking about vintage lenses so I simply wonder if there are any modern-ish Canon AF lenses with soft contrast without looking milky? Preferably in the 24-120 range (zooms are OK too)

Thanks!

Thailand

These first photos are from Nan, a province in the northern part of the country. During March, the air was smoggy and I felt difficult to breathe after a week. I do feel it added something different for landscape photos. Locals were happy to oblige me with photo, like the rest of the country. Thai people tend to want their skin to be lighter than I prefer to expose (many already people do comment I prefer my photos too dark), but the R5 is more than capable of accommodating that later. I definitely felt after I looked at my photos that I could have made some better choices, but at the same time it's difficult for me to spend time attempting cover as many angles and apertures as possible when I'm with someone kind enough to give their time for me. So, with that said, I encourage comments if you have any thoughts of negative criticism, I'm eager to read them and hope they could help me in the future.

Thank you,

Eric

Tethered shooting with iPad

I have a Canon R5 and an iPad Air with USB-C, and I want to use the iPad to check and select images. Or by Wi-Fi/Bluetooth (Which I think is a hassle) or USB-C cable.

Now, I have my clients look at the back of the iPad to check if their photo is good. Select the correct one. I do not have to cull the image, but I want to rate the image with a star so that when I import them into Photo Mechanic and later into Lightroom, the rating is maintained.

Does anyone have it working? Which app do I use? What are the drawbacks? And the experiences?

Canon cashback date in Spain

Hi everybody! I am planning to buy a new Canon EOS R8 in the Spanish market and I think that there is an upcoming cashback from Canon during the winter sales. Do you know in which dates is this cashback offered? Is it different for each country in Europe? I cannot find the past cashback dates in 2022 in Spain and it would great if I can save some money if I wait until November or so for buying it.

Thanks a lot.

Canon Patent Application: Handheld tilt-shift

We recently discussed the patent here that talked about a motorized tilt-shift lens. It was my imagination that Canon could expand the functionality far beyond simply lens control. Well, it turns out the smart minds at Canon thought the same. This patent application allows the user to select areas in which they want in focus,

Opinion: Canon’s mounting woes

One decision of Canon frustrated me so much that I stopped working on CanonNews, that was when it finally came out that Canon was aggressively preventing third-party lens manufacturers from developing the RF mount. I honestly didn’t want anything to do with Canon after that, until Craig talked me into writing for all you fine

Canon Patent Application: More Super Telephoto Zooms

Canon has published a series of 3 patent applications at the same time dealing with super-telephoto zooms. I know we have recently covered a similar patent application not so long ago, and that usually precludes me from writing up yet-another-article on this. Personally, I’m always curious when they do multiple submissions at the same time.

Canon Patent Application: Motorized Tilt / Shift

This Canon patent application delves into the operation of a motorized tilt-shift lens for what appears like the Canon RF mount. Tilt-shift lenses have complicated and fragile mechanics, and removing some of the fiddly nature from these lenses would help in the field if the ergonomics of controlling the lens were fair. From the patent

R5; How To Select Single Focal Point While Using Viewfinder

I purchased my R5 in June of 2023. From the very first I've been frustrated with trying to find a way to select a single focal point without having any other points go active.
I've seen numerous discussions on various threads regarding others having the same frustration.
Today was my third call to Canon Tech support regarding this issue, and how it's so different from several other models I've used for over 25 years. The other two calls they
didn't even seem to understand what I was trying to describe. The tech today showed me that the "only way" to select a single focal point was to use the touch screen to the point where I wanted the cameras to focus and then press the shutter and not use the back button focus. I told her that isn't very handy at all during a portrait shoot or wildlife moving with vegetation or other things nearby. I was ready to just dump my R5!
I talked to a good friend of mine who shoots Canon, but he's good at finding info on various issues. I knew you could select two buttons on the back of the camera to focus on different scenarios, like switching from single shot to servo mode, but nothing I'd come across mentioned that you could have a single focus point to work with. He forwarded something he found about setting up the AE button as a second focus button but it didn't specifically mention that by setting the AE button it would give you a single focal point. I went ahead and set it but fully expected it to behave as the focus button does.
I was very pleasantly surprised, excited actually when I used the AE button and only ONE FOCAL POINT to work with!!!
I just cannot understand with all the frustrations expressed the last few years since the camera came out that Canon and the three different tech agents could not tell me this!!
Not only on this issue but my experience with Canon tech support is that they have truly gone downhill in the last few years. Especially since most work from home and don't always have access to the exact model you are calling about and they only look online just as you've probably already tried yourself.
I hope this helps someone else.
