Opticallimits is an excellent review site, making careful assessments based on measurement rather than histrionics. It seems it's a struggle to keep going financially, and so they now have a deal with Patreon whereby you pay a $ a month to become a patron to get earlier access to their reviews. Several months ago someone posted a helpful tip on the procedure to customize the AE lock (*) or AF point selection buttons.

I did so and it was big help to me. However I recently sent my R6 to Canon for routine cleaning/service and they reset the camera to factory default settings.

What I am trying to do is to customize one of those buttons (AE lock/AF point selection) so that it toggles between ONLY 2 AF modes: Eye detection or single point focus.

My objective is to help my wife who is learning how to use the R6 to simply depress one button to toggle between eye focus (when shooting humans/animals) and single point focus (landscapes, interiors).

As best I recall the user has to first "disable" most of the myriad focus options in the menu before customizing the AE lock (*) or AF point button.

If anyone can either point me to the original post or offer detailed guidance I would appreciate it.

I have been an R6 user ever since it was realeased. Before that I used a 1D-X. Although I have been mostly satisfied with the R6 in terms of image quality, I noticed immediately right after the switch that R6 handles color noise just differently. It is hard to describe, but I have the notion that it produces much more color noise, especially at higher isos. I'm a wildlife photographer and I tend to see a lot of weird purple colors, sometimes greens in the out-of-focus, otherwise diffuse background, which is really bothering me until this day. I never had anything like this with the 1D-X.

Anyone else noticed this?

Loaded the update to my early R5 (ordered first day), and the last thing I saw displayed was the "OK" button on the screen. Then it went and stayed dark no matter what I did.
Sent it in, and they quoted $499 plus shipping and tax for parts and labor to repair. I'll report when they tell me what happened and what they did.

It was a great camera, but due to my age, I just can't get around well enough to use it, my wrists would not hold it with my big lenses. I sold it yesterday. Next are my L Lenses and a ton of accessories. I am undecided about getting a small inexpensive mirrorless body. I have some consumer RF lenses as well as EF lenses that I may keep. My daughter still uses the XTi body I gave her many years ago. It takes better images than my Galaxy S22 Ultra even with the kit lens. I'll probably use my EF 50mm Macro to photograph items I'm selling. Just to see what would happen, I took out the 4GB card put my 125GB CF card into it and it worked. Thats one benefit of CF cards, the old and the new are more compatible. It might hold 100K photos from that camera. I had to dig out my CF reader to download the images, my CF Express reader will not accept CF cards.

I was thinking of getting her a beginner mirrorless camera with a good radio to automatically transfer photos to storage. Is there any such thing? I was wondering about R10 and R50.

I did a series of headshots yesterday for a client. I photographed everyone that was there, imported the files onto my hard drive and dropboxed them all the raw images for them to edit.

I get an email today saying there is a person missing. The guy says he went to the photostation around the time of another person (midway in the shoot). I looked through all my images, he is not there.

All my RAW files are sequential, there is no break at all in the numbering. I was not shooting tethered, I had no camera malfunctions during the shoot. As part of my workflow, I take one image and check the LCD for a quick light reference. While I can't guarantee I did this for the missing person, I typically have been doing this over years.

I am shooting with an R5, and have RAW images sent to my SD and to the CF ExpressB card. Both cards are identical in content, his images are nowhere. I was taking 4-6 photos person, and this would mean that each one of those images, and only those images, are missing.

Anyone have any similar experience or issues? Or any input at all?

All I can do is, being no fault of my own, is simply head to the guy's workplace and reshoot the images. No worries, a few hours of time for travel and setup, but whatever. Its still a huge mystery for me.

I'm unfamiliar with the brand, there aren't a lot of reviews (and what there is, doesn't make it easier for me), and the price seems a little too good.

Is this correct or is April Fools Joke?

There is a lot of talk about focus shift of the RF 100L macro. I have used the lens without any issues and have been wondering a long time what's that talk is about.
So I have made four series of pictures with changing aperture.
Subject is a dead hummingbird moth I found and which is pefect for a "real life" test.
I put the camera on a tripod with a macro rail to focus, connected it to my PC. Focus set to manual, IS off.
Electronic shutter and 10s delay to prevent shake. After focussing I didn't touch the camera and set everything via PC.
The focus is set on the eye like in real life by using the 15x preview.


For every magnification I first post the uncropped picture at f/2.8 and f/32.

The DLA of the R5 is f/7.1 so @ f/8 und higher thegeneral sharpness decreases but still the eye is the most sharp subject. I see no focus shift issue.

For all I know the R5 does exactly this but I'm too blind and stupid to figure it out.

But what I'd like to be able to do is make a custom "P" (Program) mode for exposure for each lens. Basically for each EV from -5 to 25 or whatever, let me set the combination of shutter, aperture, and ISO I'd like to default to, FOR A GIVEN LENS.

The reason for this is that my detailed tests of hand-holdability with the 135mm and 100mm (see my SHOOTOUT threads on the lens topic) show they perform excellently at 1/30th while P likes 1/100 even if it has to crank ISO up. Likewise the 50mm works well at 1/2 to 1/30, but improves a lot with smaller aperture. I think you'd normally get a better photo at 1/8 f/4 than 1/30 f/2. The 24-105 does best at 1/30-1/60.

A related idea is that the camera should be able to sense how much motion there is, and pick a higher shutter for substantial motion, otherwise lower.

A lot of people use EF lenses with an adapter on their R- camera.
Is there a site were you can find how they behave on an R-camera FF and APS-c?

So, I downloaded the latest firmware for the R5 and installed it. I took a few test shots for this feature and found that if the subject moves, then it does not work. I was shooting plants in my garden and there was a slight breeze. So, I waited for the breeze to die down and took the shot again. I find some dithering at the edges of the subjects, in my case the edges of leaves when I zoom to 100%. I simply downloaded the jpg and looked. Have not downloaded DPP yet. Any idea how to clean this out? I saw a video on YouTube where a person demonstrated his first shots, and they were dithered too at the edges of objects. He said that he handheld the camera and I had placed it on my windowsill, and it was stable. I set a 2 sec timer too.

The 12% view looks fine. I have attached it below.

The 100% view has dithering at the edges of the leaves. Also attached below.

I guess this is really fine for large posters or billboards and that is probably the target market. However, if anyone knows of how to "un-dither" (for the lack of a better word) such photos, please comment.

Dear Photographers!
Back after an long recovery from iatrogenic caused problems, I´ve updated my R5 to the newest firmware. But I see strange behaviour when I switch on Ibis-Pixelshift. Then Ibis starks shivering (like when you clean the sensor). If you press the shutter, no shot is taken. I repeated the FW update several times, but nothing changes. No other issues recognisable.
Any thoughts to correct this? Here, Canon CPS increased it´s prices heavily and no cleaning is for free anymore.
