Canon RF 24-300mm f/2.8-5.6L IS USM optical formula patent published

Canon produced an EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM during the DSLR days that was a favourite of a smaller niche of photographers. We have had questions thrown our way asking if Canon would bring a modern RF version of this lens to the line-up, which we couldn’t and still can’t answer with any level of

R7 Rolling Shutter counter Intuitive

I just returned from a trip to Texas where we had an unexpected opportunity to shoot hummingbirds on the property where we were staying. We used both the R7 and the R5.

Lots of rather hilarious pictures from the R7 of wing parts elongated and even, in some cases, just floating in mid-air unattached to the bird. (A fair number of good shots with both cameras though.) This got me wondering about something.

Intuitively, it would seem that the smaller sensor size of the R7 would mean less space for the shutter to travel and therefore less, rather than more, rolling shutter. But that obviously isn't the case. At the same time, the smaller sensor would logically mean less mechanical shutter noise. Yet, that isn't the case either.

I'm guessing that the crazy loud mechanical shutter of the R7 has to do with build quality (less money spent on dampening, etc.) but I don't know. But the rolling shutter is kind of a mystery to me. Anyone care to offer an explanation that a non-technical person can understand?

Question about EOS R behaviour

I'll go on a china trip tomorrow and was in need of a full frame reserve body. Did not want to spent to much money so I bought an EOS R (which here in Germany together with the 24-105 non L glas is currently sold cheaper than the R8, RP or R6 without any lenses)

Maybe I'm spoiled form my R7 but is it normal that the R Viewfinder goes dark for a considerable moment shortly after a picture is taken?
If not, which settings do I need to tweak to get rid of it?

28mm pancake areived

My 28mm pancake arrived today.

This is not a lens I wanted, but given Canon’s inability to make the basics and give us a few f2 primes and 50 1.4, maybe it will hold me over until they get their axt together.

I have only had a few hours with it but,
It seems pretty sharp and focus is ok.
Much like the 50 stm lens.
Adequate until better comes along.

I had the EF 28 2.8 is and sold it early on once the R5 arrived.
Big mistake. It was a much better lens and still small and light weight.

For 400 bucks locally, it is pretty sharp.
The 50 stm auto focus tanks in very low light, i am expecting this too also but shot a few frames in a cafe and a bar and it it covered the basics well enough.

Will try to add some pix once i get to sit down with the imac later.

My own personal curse of the EF 200mm f1.8

Five years ago I found a good deal on a 200mm f1.8 lens, and despite still being expensive, I decided to go for it. It showed up from Japan in a frighteningly undersized box. And sure enough, the front flange of the lens got impacted and bent in during shipping. So I had to send it back.

Fast forward to today, I finally saw another one pop up within my price range, and I jumped on it. The lens arrived safely, cosmetically it looks great, better than most of these lenses do at this age. Buuuuut, the photos it takes are just no good. Here's a comparison of this lens with my EF 70-200 f2.8 II. Both photos at 2.8. Unfortunately it's clear that something is really, really wrong with this lens.

I am very close to Midwest Camera Repair. What are the chances this is fixable? Or, should I play it safe and just send the lens back. These things are so rare and so expensive, it seems that I'm cursed to never actually be able to get one to keep, despite my best attempts.

Dogs

I searched the forums for a dedicated thread for dogs - like there is one for cats.
I only found specialized ones like "My Dog" and "Dogs In Flight", etc. But maybe I missed an existing one. sorry if so.

So here is the thread for those who don't have their own dog and don't want to post only cat photos on the internet ;)

I'll start with this nicely posing neighbour of mine.

Can 5d2 shutter cable be wireless?

Hi
I (still) use Canon 5Dmk2's.
I have a device that will automatically trigger the shutter via the shutter release cable. The problem is...
1. I cant find a shutter release cable long enough (at least 2m's ideally 5m long)
2. I cant work out how to make this connection wireless, which would be the best solution.
The sending device accepts a 2.5mm jack and the receiving camera port is the N3 (remote control terminal) port (obviously)
The normal Sutter release cable is that very short curly cable (N3 to 2.5mm jack) works fine, but I need the camera to be further away from the device.

I have a few wireless triggers but they dont seem to be able to connect to the sending device (2.5mm jack)
Wasting too much time trying to working out, any clever bods around?

Thanks guys
Simon

Pangolin Safaris?

Morning all. I am considering a photographic trip to Africa at some point in the relatively near future (maybe mid next year) and at this time am tossing up between a trip to Uganda for primates or a trip to Botswana with Pangolin Safaris. Question is, has anyone here done a trip with Pangolin and if so what was your experience?

Thoughts on the folly of buying an exciting camera of the future but then being stuck in the past.

When the original R came out on the market I was tempted to buy one but since the extinct age of the Canon IX and the APS format and having bought and sold the M, M3 and M5 I learned the lesson never to pay Canon for the privilege of joining a product line they might abandon soon after.

Besides having entrenched myself in the Canon EF System for almost a quarter of a century I understand that the EF-R universe is where the future happens.

So I skipped the R and the RP, was tempted by the R6 but the R7 was the model I could not resist.

Now I have tried the camera and it is the best camera I ever had, but in my world, all its glory is earned with lenses from the past.

My initial lust for the R system came from the promise of being able to produce lenses better than ever before based on the new mount and the short flange distance and and and…

Now Canon seems to evolve the EF-R lens environment based on four principles:

  • Give the dreamers the dream lenses but charge them for it to obscene levels.
  • Give the enthusiasts a slightly better, lighter, more expensive version than EF could offer, bamboozle them with IS levels never heard before but make the lenses as slow and dark as Canon did not dare anymore since John McEnroe smiled from magazines with the first Rebel and the attached kit lens
  • Do not invent anything new for the RF-S system until every mediocre EF-M lens has been transformed, make sure that the only fast lens comes last.
  • Make sure that Sigma and Tamron do not bother us for whatever timeframe we get away with
So I marvel at 28-70mm F2.0, lust for 120-300 F2.8 and hope for 100-500 L (fast as a 70-300 kit lens but hey 500mm) but I will not be able to explain to my family why I buy a lens at such a price tag.

So I ask my dealer to let me try the 24-70 F2.8, the 15-35 F2.8, the 24-105 F4.0, the 135 F1.8 and they are all so lightweight, so tiny and shiny but I own them all in EF, some ranges I even cover multiple times, and the little advantages simply don’t stand the business case to replace lenses which I can’t sell because I need them also on my 1DX.

So I question myself was everything you learned and accepted about the advantage of inner focusing non extending lens design just marketing bullshit which Canon seems to have completely abandoned in the age of R?

So I look at my old 200 F1.8, 400 F2.8 and 300 F4.0 and wonder what made the company who once produced the 50mm F1.0 now slap the L logo on something that is F7.1

The consequence:

I rearranged the R7 in my mind. It is not a peek into the R environment, it is a 1000 Euro IBIS/EVF/DeepLearning upgrade into the EF environment.

Combination 1: R7 with Canon EF/R adapter, Sigma 17-35 F1.8 and the very old Sigma 50-150 F2.8

This combo fits into very small shoulder bags, is unobtrusive, lightweight, and adding two stop IBIS to a F1.8 lens is a marvelous experience.

Combination 2: R7 with Canon EF/R adapter and speed booster adapter, three 20 year old lenses: 17-35 F2.8L L + 24-70 F2.8 L and 300 F4 L

This combo more than fits in something small as a Tamrac Expedition 4 and allows you to start with a stabilized F2.0 ultra-wide and to choose to stop either at 300mm F2.8 or 420mm F4.0 with IBIS and IS working hand in hand

Last but not least:

The EF 24-105 F4 L combined with the EF 85 1.2L on a R7 with speed booster is the combo I wish I would have had when I still did weddings for cash. With the speed booster you have the full flexibility of the 24-105 plus one F stop more light and bokee plus 2 stabilizers working in tandem. The EF 85 is not the king of AF speed but with the EVF and the speed booster combined with the silent mode and electronic shutter of the R7 it is like using military grade night vision on an unsuspecting cinema audience. You can get the snapshots of the party crowd and can isolate them unobtrusive, silent and in situations where a single candle is sufficient for illumination.

I would love to hear from anyone else here who has experience with using yesterdays heroes on the modern equipment.

Leica announces Samyang and Astrodesign have joined the L-Mount Alliance

We’ll be honest, the first time we heard about the L-mount alliance, it didn’t really move the needle for us. Since then, we have started to see the benefits of the mount and how its helping the member brands. It has probably had the most benefit camera wise for Leica with their SL series. Panasonic
