Cannon R-7 and R-6

I bought the Cannon R-7 for the speed of the camera. I cover a lot of events, Ren. Fest, where I want the speed of the camera. A few months, after I bought the R-7 I was at a Ren. fest shooting. I started having error messages, the camera started to lock up. The view finder would go black. I received Error 20 messages and other messages where i had to pull the battery out and reset the camera. It became annoying. I had my back up R-5 with me. A few months latter I was at a big fashion show. The event was outdoors, low light. The R-7 started to act up again. Same issues. I had to tell people that I was having camera issues, once again, I switched to the R-5. I took it into the camera shop. They sent the camera into Cannon to get it fixed. Over this past weekend, I was at a heavy shooting event. The R-7 locked up on me, again, Error 20. It is now going back to Cannon to be looked at again.

I have had issues with the R-6 as well. Fashion shows, heavy shooting, the camera will not track the models. It has a hard time trying to focus, it will go in, out, it will over expose photos, it has a hard time with exposure. I have had to switch to the R-5 or my D90, which, does a great job, but the speed is not there.

When I bought these cameras I thought I was getting great, high end cameras. Did Cannon put out the cameras, knew the issues, but put the cameras out anyhow?

Which lens to buy?

Birding who wants to make the plunge into the big boy canon lenses. Weight is an issue as i like to bird with a camera and hiking may be an issue with a heavy lens. Current set up Canon R5 and 100-500 7.1

Option 1: Canon rf 600 f4
Heavy and pricey but looks to be an awesome lens. Would get me more reach and some very nice shots

Option 2: Purchase the 200-500 f4 and the rumored super Teleconverter. Probably pretty heavy but maybe lighter than the 600 not sure. I like the many options this gives me. At worst I have the same focal length I’m used to but f4 to f7.1 is a noticeable difference I believe. With the Teleconverter I could extend and have 700 at 5.6 which also would be great. Then for certain scenarios like ID shots etc I would be at 1000mm f8 which quite frankly sounds great. Probably pretty heavy and maybe 20k when it’s all said and done yikes

Option 3: purchase 100-300 2.8 and stack a 2xTC and be at 600 f5.6. Not sure of the weight but I’m thinking this would be the smallest and lightest of the options. I don’t like that I would never use the lens without a Teleconverter really. This would also maybe be the cheapest of the options.

Love the insight and feedback from this forum. Thank you

EF 50/1.4 usm vs 7artisans 55/1.4mkii

Recently picked up a used boxed pristine 7artisans 35/1.4 I’m currently using it on my M50, works great. I also have a used 7artisans 25/1.8 arriving tomorrow too
Both were ridiculously cheap so no damage to the wallet

I’m now tempted to buy a used cheap 7artisans 55/1.4 mkii as well, but
I have several 50mm inc a few non canon.
My question is would the 55mm 7artisans give me something that my canon 50/1.4 usm cannot??

My worry is that focusing the 25 & 35 manually is easy, however, the 55 is almost equivalent to 90mm (88mm) in FF and at 1.4 the DoF is gonna be crazy thin, I’m just wondering given the M50 has eye focus if I’m better off sticking with my canon ef50/1.4 ?

Optically would there be much difference ?

Any advice?

Practically impossible to find the correct/current CR Rating definitions on the site

[Following was originally posted in "CR Pro General Board", but I think this is the right/better place to post it...]

It started by I spotted this thread discussing rumors and the CR rating system going from CR1 to CR5 !

As an old user on CR, I knew the CR1-CR5 rating system was very old and had been replaced by CR0-CR3 ratings many years ago.

But it was really hard to find proof of that! I started clicking around on the CR-site to find description of ratings. No success at all.

Then tried searching CR and found only the old CR1-CR5 ratings.

Finally I found the CR0-CR3 description via WaybackMachine to the old design of CR-site where page describing current rating-system was easy to spot. And that gave me some words to search for. But via Google! The page doesn't seem to be indexed in CR's own search engine!?:

So I think the CR-site needs an update to make it easy to spot/find the information about the rating-system. Right now it is practically impossible to find the correct version.

While on holidays at Kos island in Greece we had several quite windy days with more than 5 bft.
It was a real pleasure to watch all that kitesurfers in action.
I did some tries on them and here are my first results.

Threaded vs "flat" view

I'm using "dpreview terms", hope I can explain it :)

I've always seen the forum threads with a "flat"view, so with each answer shown in chronological order.

Since a couple of days I'm seeing a different view, where subsequent messages are not show chronologically, but answers to a specific message are grouped under the very same message, creating mini threads into each discussion, see example below.

Screenshot 2023-06-22 alle 10.45.41.png

How that happened? I moved something (don't remember I had; also I just searched in options and preferences and not seeing anything related to control the view) or it's a server side change? Is it possible to revert my own view to the normal flat chronological view?

Thanks.

I found this very prophetic 2012 article on Kodak being killed by digital photography that in turn was decimated by iPhones and Androids.
