A few new Canon products have been cancelled due to the supply chain issues

I have been talking to a few people about upcoming products that haven’t come to fruition yet, and it looks like a few may have been cancelled and are being “refreshed”.
While no products were directly named by my sources, one from retail mentioned that they were shown products last year that haven’t made it to market and have been removed from internal product documents.
A second source said it’s likely that some of the cancelled products are being refreshed to meet the expectations of the market once supply chain issues have been resolved. This makes a lot of sense for cameras, as the specifications can be dated quite quickly in that space. Lenses on the other hand exist for many years, and Canon can continue to roll them out.
With the NABShow in October being cancelled, a lot of new Cinema EOS products may have been cancelled or delayed. The next NABShow is scheduled for April 2022. That said, I do think we’ll see some Cinema EOS announcements this year, but it’ll likely be for...

Canon updates its list of products affected by supply chain issues

Canon has updated its list of current products affected by supply chain issues to include the recently announced Canon RF 5.2mm f/2.8L Dual Lens Fisheye.
If you have read much about the global chip and optical glass shortages, all signs point to this being an issue well into 2022. If any of the new products are going to fit into your workflow, I’d definitely get on a preorder list or two, as there are always cancellations.
I appreciate Canon doing this, as a lot of these things are out of its control. Even bad news can sometimes help you plan projects and work taking place in the near future.

I don´t understand the Canon RF Lens Philosophy

What are Canon up to?! I do not a need a RF5.2mm F2.8 L Dual Fisheye! Neither a Canon RF 28-70/2 or any of the f1,2 lenses. They are too heavy and too expensive! Most of us professionals don't need this kind of optics. I need a good compromise between weight, performance and price.

Where are the RF50mm/1,4, RF24mm/2,0, RF20mm/2,8 or the RF135mm/2,0?

I have been a loyal Canon user and a professional photographer for more than 35 years. But I don't understand the Canon company any longer. Come on, Canon!

Stock Notice: Canon RF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM & Canon RF 600mm f/4L IS USM

The Canon USA store has stock of the brand new Canon RF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM & Canon RF 600mm f/4L IS USM. Stock levels are very limited and these lenses will likely be difficult to purchase for the foreseeable future.
One of the cool features of the upcoming Canon EOS R3 is its ability to send more power to the autofocus motors to improve performance. The EF versions of these lenses are not capable of this feature.

Canon RF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM $11,999
Canon RF 600mm f/4L IS USM $12,999

AF Beam on Canon R-series

Hi Everyone

Does anyone know why Canon blocks the LED AF Beam on third party flashes?
This has to be something in the software, cause it works on other mirrorless cameras.
Or does anyone know a workaround to make it work?

I'm a nightlife photographer and I really depend on the beam. My 5Div is near end of life and I'm already switching to the R series.

Kind regards

Patent: Canon RF 28-70mm f/2.8, with focus on a compact design

Canon News has uncovered a new optical formula patent for a Canon RF 28-70mm f/2.8. Canon seems to have worked quite hard at reducing the size of such a design significantly. The design in this patent is actually smaller than the highly-regarded Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III RXD for the Sony E mount.
Canon has a couple of lenses already covering this focal length, such as the RF 28-70mm f/2L and the RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS, but as we saw with the EF mount, the EF 24-70mm f/4L IS was quite a popular option for people that didn’t want the size, expense or speed of the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II.
With the EF 24-70mm f/4L IS being discontinued, there is likely a need for a smaller 24-70 type...

EOS R5: Does IBIS work with adapted manual focus lenses (ie vintage)

Hi all,
I'm still doing research about the Canon R series of cameras before I look to jump in.
As I'd mentioned in another thread, I'm interested in adapting interesting vintage lenses to the Canon mirrorless R camera...its a fun benefit for mirrorless that you can get new use out of very interesting old lenses.

I thought I'd heard that the IBIS for some reason may not work when adapted manual lenses are attached?

Is this true or not?

I was kinda puzzled when I thought I heard this as that my GFX has IBIS that works with manual lenses attached, I"d assumed this was normal behavior.

I know the lenses don't have any stabilization but IBIS should work with any lens attached, right?

Thank you in advance,

cayenne

Nikon releases a teaser video for the upcoming flagship Z 9 mirrorless camera

Nikon is getting ready to officially announce the Nikon Z 9 flagship mirrorless camera body. It’s rumoured that Nikon will make an official announcement next week.
Nikon Z 9 Rumored Specifications from Nikon Rumors

8256 x 5504px resolution that confirms a 45MP stacked sensor (it is interesting to note that Canon decided to go with a 24MP sensor for their R3 camera).
The Z9 will be capable of up to 120 fps in a lower res file size (6Mb I think). Some reports even indicated 160 fps!
Built-in GPS – probably GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System).
The Z9 will use the same battery as D6. There will be also a new 18-type battery (EN-EL18x) that can be charged by the camera’s USB-C.
The sensor has a multi-leaf blade protective shutter that auto covers the sensor when switched off/changing lens to stop dust and dirt on naked sensor.
The Z9 will have car autofocus in addition to animal and people AF as...

ICYMI: Here’s a patent for the upcoming Canon RF 5.2mm f/2.8L VR Lens

Back in September of 2020, I published a patent found by Canon News for what looks to be the upcoming Canon RF 5.2mm f/2.8L VR lens.
This is obviously a niche market lens, but it shows Canon is thinking outside of the box and coming up with new ideas for the RF mount.
Canon RF 5.2mm f/2.8L VR Lens

Focal length: 5.57mm
F-number: 2.80
Half angle of view: 90.00°
Image height: 8.75mm
Total lens length: 96.00mm
BF: 13.50mm

From Japan Patent 2019-033296
In the lens device, since the angle of view of the optical system is relatively narrow and the distance (baseline length) between the optical axes of the two optical systems is short, the realism of the obtained stereoscopic...

[SOLVED] R5 firmware 1.4.0. - inconsistent light metering/histogram

The problem has been solved, see post #12.

I have upgraded the firmware from 1.3.1 to 1.4.0 and voila! The problem is here... Canon has broken something in light metering in still photos mode.

I'm using my R5 on the telescope (no aperture and focus info) for contrails spotting, like this one for example (taken about two weeks before upgrading the firmware):
GTR_4915.jpg

But after upgrading to 1.4.0 I'm not able to do that any more! And what's worse - I'm not able to downgrade the firmware to 1.3.1 because Canon doesn't want me to do that... what a mess.

The problem is somewhere in the firmware definitely:
on the screen or EVF we have our picture with exposure simulation, the histogram shows everything OK, but after taking the shot, the picture is completely over exposed. When I put the under expose correction (for example full -3EV) to move a histogram completly to the left, after the shot it is completly to the right side - it is impossible to take a good exposure shot.

The problem is only in still pictures mode, in the movie mode everything is OK.
Also there is no problem in still pictures mode when using RF lens.
So the inconsistent exposure is only with let's say - third party optics, like my telescope. If it was mechanical failure of metering system, it would be in all modes and scenarios - here it isn't.

I've tried to reinstall the 1.4.0 firmware - no change (yes, you can reinstall the same version of FV, but you cannot downgrade it to the last known working).
I've switched beetwen all the still modes available (P, M, A, S and so on) - no change.
I've switched beetwenn CF and SD cards - no change.
I've switched beetwen RAW, JPG, DualPixel RAW - no change.
I've reseted all the camera settings - no change.
The problem is even in full Manual mode - I'm chosing the correct settings for exposure, and the picture is still very over exposed.
I'm talking of about 15-20 EV stops! Full spectrum of histogram from left to right!

I really don't have any more ideas to find the solution.

CANON - please repair it immediately! And give - us - photographers - the choice to downgrade the firmware when you broke something in the new version!

By the way - there is also some issue in timelapse mode with electronic shutter - camera is taking 2 - 3 shots, instead of one. But this bug is for some other topic.

Help with estimate on swapping things out

Hi there,
Haven’t been on here for a long time. Botched eye surgery and diminished interest put a damper on things.
I still have my 5D Mk2 in good working order, a 50L, 135L, 200L, and a 24-105 4L (first series).

I’m not looking to switch over to the new R series or anything mirrorless. I feel Canon just screwed me over for the second time since the FD to EF switch. So if I stick to photography I’ll ultimately have to suck it up and buy a Leica M.

Long story short, for what I still do (mostly people photography, and I have shoot with a band coming up) I’m thinking about trading my 200 2.8 (fixed) and my 24-105 for the original non-IS version of the 24-70 2.8L.
Does this line up for an even trade give or take?
