RF 15-35mm f/2.8 IS USM

I'm a little surprised the 15-35mm doesn't get more love, but I imagine the early reviews emphasizing its heavy vignetting wide-open play a part. Personally, I admit to not using it much, as events have sort of fallen by the wayside for me. But, anticipating the arrival of the new 10-20mm, I've started using the 15-35mm more at the wide end to start seeing and thinking in terms of UWA again.

This initial shot is not the best, most representative image I've managed to capture, but it does show that having a fresh attitude with older gear can lead to some happy accidents. Plus it is a bit Halloweeny here a few days before October 31st.

This was taken at our local museum in a traveling exhibit about paleontology finds in Antarctica, where, many of you might remember, John Carpenter's The Thing was set.

The glare coming from the face was just reflection from the overhead lighting on snow-goggles. I didn't think to do that when I knelt for a UWA shot, but once I saw it, I did shift a little bit to try to center and maximize the brightness of the glare. In LR Classic, all I did was convert to B&W, add some blue color-grading, and selectively applied texture to the jacket.

Note that the included comparison movie poster was copied from an Amazon product page.

ISO 3200, f/2.8, 1/400th, 15mm

Potential focus issues with AI Servo.......any suggesitons?

Hi Cannonites, I'm having a couple of issues with my auto focus when shooting sports. Heres the stats
5d Mk4
70-200 f2.8 IS
F4.5 (for depth of field)
ISO 6400 or higher
1/1000th second
AI Servo single point
Back button focus
High speed drive mode
The majority of the images are fine but every now and then I get a few different issues.
Sometimes the focus point locks on and registers (using light room plugin to confirm in post) but yet the subject is not in focus, in fact nothing in the image is in focus, yet the camera registers a focus point has been achieved.
Other times the subjects face is wildly out of focus and their legs are in focus, when they're in the same focal plane.
Any tips on trying to resolve or am I always going to have to consign a % of images as waste?
Thanks

Canon is actively conducting market research on a “retro” style camera body

Back in August, we spent a bit of time reading between the lines about a “retro” influences Canon camera from comments made by a Canon executive. This topic was brought up in response to the hype around Nikon’s Zf retro camera body. Now it appears Canon is actively asking customers which of their most iconic

SIGMA 200-500mm f/2.8 in the field, JuzaPhoto revisits the SIGZilla

The SIGMA 200-500mm f/2.8 EX DG was a very niche lens that SIGMA released in 2007. I had a chance to hold one back when Lensrentals.com had a copy of the behemoth. It’s big and heavy, but who was it made for? I have been told that law enforcement and military were the main customers

RF 35/1.8 for astrophotography

I am looking for a 35 mm lens for astrophotography. I've been looking at RF 35/1.8, but the sticking point is coma/astigmatism which is severe wide-open.
But ... does this problem go away when the lens is stopped down? For example, here is an aperture sweep of my RF 24/1.8 which has bad astigmatism wide open but produces nice results from f/3.5 and up.

RF24ApertureSweep.jpg

I shoot with a star tracker so f/4 is not a big deal.
I know that there are other lenses out there that have well-controlled astigmatism wide open: EF 35/1.4 L mk2, Tamron 35/1.4 di USD, Sigma 28/1.4 Art. But these are big and heavy lenses, and I'd love to have a small, nimble little lens, particularly for other uses. RF 35/1.8 has a lot going for it: nice bokeh, close focusing, sharp, lightweight, punchy colors, small, great price. There is just the astigmatism problem. Does RF 35/1.8's astigmatism problem go away when stopped down? Is there an aperture sweep out there that anyone can point me to? Usually I look at Lenstip for that, but they don't have a complete review of this lens.
One more thing. Does RF 35/1.8 have field curvature? Field curvature and astro don't go together very well. I've been burned by that before with other lenses.
Thanks.

Canon Patent Application: IBIS heat transfer improvements

As sensors get more complicated, faster, and also more stacked there is more heat generated from the sensor itself. As fabrication design rules get smaller, for normal chips that reduces the size of the chip which reduces the resistance to electric current, and usually heat – which is why as design rules get smaller, chips

Canon Patent Application: High Precision AF for Tilt / Shift Lenses

In this Canon Patent Application (2023-153460) Canon discusses both the need and the method of changing focusing during shift or tilt operations. As with the other patent applications in this series, I should first mention that the tilting and shifting discussed seem to be internal and done by moving optical elements. That question has been

Here is the unannounced Canon RF-S 10-18 f/4.5-6.3 IS STM

We have reported recently that an ultra-wide RF-S zoom lens was coming this year, and it looks like Canon will be bringing the RF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM to fill that need in the RF-S lineup. You can see that this lens has a tiny 48mm filter thread. Unfortunately we don’t have any other specifications

Canon Patent Application: Small telephoto 70mm Primes

This patent application (2023-149130)shows some interesting and fairly simplistic optics for 70, 75, and 85mm primes. The 85mm primes are unlikely since we already have the Canon RF 85mm F2.0 IS STM. It should be noted that the element designs in this patent application are far simpler than the 85mm F2.0. Most likely because of
